Dr. Martin Luther King Junior dedicated his life to advancing civil rights and fighting racism and oppression. To honor his legacy, we will be fundraising for BIPOC led organizations working for racial justice and leading a land tending event at Powell Butte.

We know that groups and individuals often look for service opportunities on Dr. MLK Jr. day, and our organization has long held an event on this day of service. If you would like to participate, we encourage everyone to volunteer AND DONATE to a BIPOC led group working for racial justice.

Not sure who to support? Here are some organizations we suggest.

The Blueprint Foundation – Empowering future generations by providing culturally responsive mentoring and experiential learning opportunities along various pathways so they can build their own futures and careers.

Love is Stronger – Through the power of love, we build healing, accountability, and safety for Portland kids and families impacted by gang violence across generations.

    When: Monday January 20th, 2025 9am-12pm

    Where: Powell Butte Natural Area

    What: Planting and mulching

How to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine, so dress for weather: rain coat, warm layers, sun hat, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack.

We will provide: Gloves, all necessary tools and instruction. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact marlee@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. We will provide hot drinks and snacks!

Health and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness.

Children are welcome at this event if accompanied by an attentive adult.

Accessibility: This event may require standing for long periods, walking over uneven ground, going up or down steep slopes, bending, and lifting heavy objects.

Getting there: Directions will be emailed to you after registration

    Start Date: 1/20/2025

The Great Planting and Propagation Day of Service

    Monday, January 20, 2025
    10:00 am - 1:00 pm

    Water Resources Education Center
4600 SE Columbia Way Vancouver WA 98661
    Directions

Join the City of Vancouver’s AmeriCorps members on Monday, January 20 to observe and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Join us on a day of service by planting and learning about plant propagation at the Water Resources Education Center. Together we will work to restore the riparian area next to the Center and learn about the importance of native plants.

Advanced registration is required. RSVP today!

Training, gloves, tools, water and snacks will be provided. This opportunity is family-friendly and great for teens. Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Youth under 18 must provide a signed minor consent form.

Accessibility is important to us and we’ve taken it into account while planning this event. This location is partially wheelchair accessible, and work is primarily done in a natural area near a highway with potential for some infrequent loud work sounds. The propagation portion of the project is wheelchair accessible. For mulching projects, volunteers may be shoveling, twisting, and turning, and pushing wheelbarrows. For invasive removal projects, volunteers may be kneeling, pulling, and twisting as well as possibly lifting plants overhead to load into a dumpster. There will be a space in the RSVP form for you to let us know if there are any accessibility needs you have so that we can do our best to find a volunteer role that will work for you.

This beautiful oak woodland habitat is home to 150-year-old white oaks and a diversity of wildlife! Invasive species, especially ivy, have taken over the forest and we need your help! We will be pulling invasive ivy and other invasive species. Pulling ivy requires volunteers to be able to bend over or kneel, but we can arrange alternate projects for those with different abilities or mobility issues. Please invite others.

We will be working outdoors so please dress for the weather (long pants and layers are recommended). Sturdy, closed-toed shoes are required. Bring your own water bottle and gloves. Extra tools, gloves, and training will be provided. Please bring any medication you may need (Asthma Inhaler, Epi-Pen, etc.) Children are welcome if accompanied by an attentive adult. Unfortunately, there is no bathroom on site. Please stop by, learn about oak woodland ecology, and lend a hand as we enhance this unique oak woodland!

Parking: Park in the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints parking lot. We have permission. There are two entrances, please take the second entrance on the right when you turn off Kerr Pkwy. 14903 Westlake Dr. Lake Oswego, OR 97035

Site Directions: From the church parking lot at NE corner of Westlake Drive and Kruse Way, walk up the sidewalk on Westlake Drive heading away from Kruse Way. Cross Parkview Drive and the woods where we will be working is on the right.
