Art, Ecology, and Marine Debris Beach Clean Up - Sand Lake

Join Oregon Shores and other community members to clean up a limited access area south of Cape Lookout in preparation for the snowy plover nesting season and for the 2025 Art & Ecology Workshops! Marine debris can attract predators to plover habitat and entangle wildlife. Removing waste before plovers begin nesting creates safer nesting habitat for this threatened bird.
We will be sorting marine debris to be used in two art projects on the north coast. In May, students will create a collaborative mural in a workshop led by artist Elizabeth Roberts. Then, in the fall, Elizabeth will use materials we find to build a permanent sculpture to be displayed at Sunset Beach in Clatsop County in partnership with Lewis & Clark National Historic Park, Oregon State Parks, and NOAA.
Things to know:
- One way distance is three miles
- Shuttles will be available through Camp Meriweter to return participants to their vehicles
- Because we may be near Snowy Plovers, no dogs please (plovers perceive dogs as predators)
- End time may vary depending on the amount of debris and participants
- Clean up will go on, rain or shine, but may be canceled if weather is especially bad
